WORKSHOPS AND TRAINING COURSES

Courses on Painting:

Course of Self-Portrait Painting: each participant had to paint themselves with the help of a photograph taken before. We teach some principal and basic technique and help them during the process, fundamentally through the instrument of motivation.

Course of collective painting:  together we chose some themes and painted small pieces of wood. Once the course was finished we put the pieces of wood together to make a collective piece of Art.

Mural: in the Camp where they live we made a mural to ameliorate the space where they have to stay until they can move to the Spanish peninsula. The theme was chosen together in the preparatory classes.

Course of Photography:

We realized various photography courses. The participant, no more than 15 each course, had a camera each and made various reportages. Parallel theoretical and practical lessons give the instrument to prepare a final work and let migrants ameliorate their approach to the photography. We focus principally on Portrait, self-portrait, the space surround and finally we focus on telling stories through the lens of photography.

Course of Video:

We realized various video courses. The participant, no more than 15 each course, had a video camera each and made various reportages. Parallel theoretical and practical lessons give the instrument to prepare a final work and let migrants ameliorate their approach to the video. We focus principally on telling stories through the lens of the camera and on working together. Each group of participants had to prepare a short movie. During the preparation they had to write down their ideas, dialogues, storyboard and film the movie.

Course of Radio and New media:

Theoretical and practical issues serve to teach migrants the importance of communication. We teach how to use an open source radio program to record programs or music and how to create, use and develop a blog. We add some typing and vocal lessons to improve their skills.

Course of Theatre:

We created a theatre group made up of migrants from different places and gender. We pretend to represent a piece of theatre that in some aspects said something new and different about the migration process but without being the actors or the directors of the pieces. We coordinated the course but did not write the script. We gave them some theory and practical exercise but did not choose the roles and the theme. The migrants demonstrated a great capacity to work together and create a story to tell to the people. They represented the piece titled “my adventure” in a public square of Melilla and in the theatre of the University.

Due to the positive results of the project, the local NGO’s are continuing our work started in July of 2010. We believe the project had a positive outcome, especially for the migrants who needed alternatives to their routine, boring and coactive lives in the Camp. We also believe the institution does not really invest in the training of the migrants that spend in many cases,  years waiting in the city of Melilla. We did not have great difficulty in developing the projects and the response of the migrants on one side and of the rest of the society on the other side were very positive. The only problems come from the lack of will to create alternatives that comes from the Institution that control the Camp, interested principally in controlling but not in proposing changes or stimulating alternatives.
